Who I Am – Counsellor G12 and W2

My name is Maresa Segura. I am a BACP registered  counsellor in G12 Glasgow and W2, West London. I am a private practitioner focused on creating solutions for the still suffering individual.

My personal motivation in becoming  a therapist is the passion I hold for creating greater understanding and better outcomes in the field of mental wellbeing. Too often, I have spoken with people who have had poor experiences of accessing therapy. Some couldn’t get access to therapy in their area,whilst others felt they were being offered an inadequate level of support, pointing to a serious lack of supply within the health services. Many were also confused about the variety of complex, incompatible theoretical approaches to healing and health.

Combating Shame and Stigma

During my education and training as a therapist at the University of Roehampton, I also became aware of the whole variety of taboos and barriers encountered by people seeking better mental wellbeing. I have met people who have been shamed and stigmatised because of their sexuality, their ethnicity, their culture, race, religion, HIV status, background and education – and moreover, because of the nature of their issues, such is the misunderstanding of many in society when faced with the symptoms of drug, alcohol, food, sex, gambling and work addictions.

That’s why I started to practice. My ethos is simple. It’s about:

• Serving all communities and all people in a non-judgemental way, using therapists with a record of academic and professional excellence. If I can’t personally work with you due to geography or scheduling issues I can confidently refer you to one of my colleagues.
• An integrative whole-world approach, putting the client, not the theory or philosophy, first
• Honesty and integrity in terms of seeking the best outcome for the client, putting quality first, and following all relevant professional and ethical guidelines

In short, I believe in supporting people in their journey towards mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing by nurturing the human potential for strength, hope and healthy interdependence. My focus is upon helping to expand my client’s imaginative horizons for the future whilst aiding them in working through  present struggles. I give equal value to future possibilities as I do past impressions. I provide a safe, comfortable space and time to talk, to experience, to explore, and to grow together.
